Panthers may land 'Hard Knocks' spotlight
The Carolina Panthers were installed Saturday as the favorites to be featured on HBO's "Hard Knocks" after center Ryan Kalil suggested that the documentary's makers were headed to North Carolina.
The award-winning series, which enjoyed record ratings last summer thanks to Jets head coach Rex Ryan's colorful performances, was still searching for an NFL team to succeed the New York franchise in agreeing to let cameras in on its training camp.
The enduring lockout at least gave the producers more time to forge an agreement after the Denver Broncos, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Detroit Lions all declined the opportunity.
The Panthers would offer an attractive storyline after drafting Heisman Trophy quarterback Cam Newton first overall following an NFL worst 2-14 season.
Kalil set tongues wagging after tweeting, "Reliable source telling me possible reality sports doc TV series coming to NC after (Thursday's) media presence covering Panther POTA's (player workouts)."
He then uploaded an image, apparently a mock-up, that read "Hard Knocks" above "Training Camp With The Carolina Panthers."
