NFL roundup: C.J. Anderson to undergo knee surgery, headed to IR

C.J. Anderson’s 2016 NFL season is over, as the Denver Broncos running back will undergo surgery on his knee. He will be placed on IR.

The Denver Broncos will host the San Diego Chargers in an NFL Week 8 AFC West showdown on Sunday, but they will be without one half of their running back tandem.

C.J. Anderson will undergo surgery on his meniscus, and will be placed on injured reserve. The injury will end his 2016 season, and will force rookie Devontae Booker to carry the load in the backfield. Denver is currently 5-2 on the season, tied for first in the AFC West with the Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders were also in the news on Thursday, as Aldon Smith applied for reinstatement. Smith was suspended for a year for violating the NFL Policy and Program for Substances of Abuse, though the suspension will expire on Nov. 17. If he is reinstated, he would be a shot in the arm for the Raiders, who are trying to make the playoffs for the first time since 2002. Smith would team with Khalil Mack to be a dangerous 1-2 pass rushing combo.

On Sunday morning, the Washington Redskins and Cincinnati Bengals will square off in London. The Redskins got some good news on Thursday, as two star players have been cleared to make the trip across the pond.

Tight end Jordan Reed and cornerback Josh Norman have both cleared concussion protocol, and will be ready to suit up for the 9:30 a.m. ET start. Reed has missed two games because of his concussion, while Norman was hurt this past week against the Lions.

Ryan Fitzpatrick will get the start for the New York Jets on Sunday, as they face the winless Cleveland Browns on the road. Unfortunately for Fitz, he will likely be without the anchor of his offensive line. Nick Mangold is walking around in a boot, and the Jets are preparing Wes Johnson to make his second career start on Sunday. Even without Mangold, the Jets should be able to take care of business on Sunday.

Richard Sherman is one of the more recognizable players in the NFL, known for his incredible play, and his outspoken nature. On Thursday, he spoke out against the NFL, stating that that the league is trying to take the emotion out of the game.

Sherman feels that it is one of the reasons why fan interest in the game is declining, while stating that NFL commissioner Roger Goodell wants his players to be robots. He may have a point, as ratings are down across the board this season.
