Matt Prater believes a 70-yard field goal in a game is 'doable'

Denver Broncos kicker Brandon McManus hit a 70-yard field goal during training camp practice this week, spurring some debate about how realistic a field-goal attempt from that far away would be in a game situation.

Detroit Lions kicker Matt Prater thinks its possible.

"If it's the right opportunity at the end of the game or before a half and that's your best option, why not attempt it," Prater said, per ESPN's Jeff Legwold. "It's definitely doable."

Prater, 31, set the NFL record for longest field goal made with a 64-yarder in 2013, when he was playing for the Broncos. He praised his Denver successor for the long kick in practice.

"It's a big kick," he said. "Not everyone can do it, but it's a big kick for him and good for him."

The Lions picked up Prater in-season and made 21-of-26 of his field-goal attempts (80.8 percent) in 11 games last year, including a long of 52 yards. This offseason, he was re-signed to a three-year, $9 million extension.
