The Detroit Lions claimed quarterback Thaddeus Lewis off waivers Wednesday and released quarterback Alex Carder.

Lewis started last season as an undrafted free agent in St. Louis but spent most of the year on Cleveland's practice squad. He started the Browns' final game last season and threw for 204 yards with a touchdown and interception.

Lewis, Shaun Hill and Kellen Moore are behind starter Matthew Stafford.

Carder was an undrafted free agent from Western Michigan.
