Jim Tomsula wants to temper expectations on Jarryd Hayne's debut

The Jarryd Hayne hype train is about to leave the station.

Almost.

Hayne's debut went about as good as the coaching staff could have hoped: five carries for 63 yards, including a 53-yard gain, plus a 33-yard kickoff return and two punt returns for 24 yards.

However, head coach Jim Tomsula doesn't want to get too carried away after just one preseason game.

"I'd just want to temper everything," Tomsula told CSN Bay Area. "We don't need to put undue expectations (on him). That's unnecessary to me, to put that on his plate right now. I just want him to stay focused on getting better. The guy is a world-class athlete."

Hayne showed he can certainly contribute in some capacity if he makes the final 53-man roster.

More than anything, though, Tomsula just wants to see improvement as Hayne gets exposed to live in-game situations.

"We're definitely looking for the big growth to be from Week 1 to Week 2, and 2 to 3," Tomsula said. "After Week 3, you've an idea where it is and you're running out of time."
