Jets LB Lorenzo Mauldin focusing on two things this offseason
The New York Jets didn't get a ton out of their draft class in 2015, aside from Leonard Williams, of course. Devin Smith and Bryce Petty, second- and fourth-round picks, respectively, didn't have much of an impact at all, but the player taken between them showed some promise.
Linebacker Lorenzo Mauldin didn't start a single game this season, but he played in 15 and looked like he could be a promising pass rusher. Despite making just 17 tackles, four of those were sacks -- good for fourth on the team. However, there is still plenty of room for improvement. He was used mainly as a situational pass rusher because of his lack of experience in other aspects of the game.
This offseason, he's planning to shore up his weak spots and improve his overall game.
“My biggest thing is being able to learn how to drop in coverage and being able to play against the run," Mauldin said via the team's official website. "It takes a lot of skill and practice, just being able to go out there during the offseason and train as hard as I can and much as I can and come back and show the coaches that I am an every-down player.”
The fact that he only recorded 17 tackles in 15 games shows both a lack of playing time and a struggle to defend the run. He was just a rookie -- and a third-round pick at that -- so there's time to get better.
