Jet: Smith outperforming Sanchez
The pressure seems to be mounting on Mark Sanchez.
An unnamed veteran Jet told ESPN New York on Wednesday that rookie quarterback Geno Smith is outplaying Sanchez.
“He can do more,” the New York Jets veteran, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said.
Smith, who was expected to be a first-round pick in last April’s NFL Draft, fell to the second round, where the Jets took him with the 39th overall pick. His ability to buy time in the pocket while also picking up yards on the ground is something the Jets haven’t had with Sanchez under center.
Sanchez is returning after an awful 2012 campaign in which he threw 18 interceptions and compiled a QB rating of 66.9. Those numbers prompted numerous trade rumors, but New York decided to retain the former No. 5 overall pick.
New Jets general manager John Idzik said last month that he will weigh in on who should be the starting signal caller this year, saying it will not solely be up to Ryan.
