Former NFL player convicted of tax fraud, faces nine years in prison

Former NFL player Greg Boyd has been convicted of income tax fraud and could face up to nine years in prison.

A federal jury in Austin found Boyd guilty last week of filing fraudulent income tax returns in 2004, 2005 and 2006. Court documents show Boyd reported no income for each year. Boyd said he believed his returns were legal based on a book that asserted that only federal employees, federal contractors and investors in federal securities owed income taxes.

Sentencing is Feb. 10.

Boyd was a defensive back at Arizona before playing two years in the NFL. He was the Miami Dolphins' 13th-round pick in the 1973 NFL draft before being traded to New England, where he played in 1973. He played in New Orleans in 1974.
