Favre: Is Jonathan Martin 'kidding'?

Published Nov. 18, 2013 12:00 a.m. ET

Many in the Miami Dolphins locker room expressed their surprise in the immediate aftermath of Jonathan Martin's decision to leave the team because of alleged bullying. Brett Favre knows how they feel.

The future Hall of Famer sat down with the "TODAY" show’s Matt Lauer for an interview that aired Monday morning, and he gave his thoughts on the situation that has kept both Martin and fellow lineman Richie Incognito away from the Miami facilities for the past few weeks.

“You have to be kidding me,” Favre said when asked what his initial reaction was to Martin’s allegations. “Pro football? Bullying? It’s the toughest sport, most violent. Not to mention you’re men. So it’s not like it’s a little 12-year-old on a playground,” he continued. “And I’m not defending or condoning. All I’m saying is my initial reaction was a grown man who is 320 pounds is getting bullied?”

Favre did not deny the fact that hazing takes place in NFL locker rooms, however. In fact, he said it’s something that happens in nearly every organization.

“There’s a lot of guys getting picked on,” he said. “Some handle it well. Some don’t handle it as well. I’m not saying it’s right and from a locker room or team stance, I’m not saying it’s wrong. It’s just the way it is.”
