Fantasy Football: 49ers Quarterback Colin Kaepernick Still a Viable Option in Week 14

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick disappointed many fantasy football owners with a dreadful performance against the Chicago Bears in Week 13. But there are good enough reasons to consider him this upcoming week versus the New York Jets.

Any thoughts of Colin Kaepernick emerging as a late-season sleeper quarterback in fantasy football leagues was quickly put to rest against the Chicago Bears in Week 13.

The San Francisco 49ers fell to the Bears 26-6 amid snowstorm flurries and a wholly unproductive performance from the majority of the Niners offense.

Hardly anyone on San Francisco’s roster is worth considering, let alone starting, in fantasy football leagues at this point in the year. But Kap’s recent play over the four weeks leading up to last Sunday might have convinced some owners he was worth a look in deeper leagues.

And Week 13 should have been a golden opportunity for the quarterback to continue his upward trend. After all, the Bears are still atrocious even after their win over the Niners.

Kaepernick’s line was 1-of-5 for four yards while taking five sacks. Yes, you read that right. And the lowly effort resulted in him being benched for backup QB Blaine Gabbert in the fourth quarter.

Kap owners received a whopping two points in ESPN standard-scoring leagues.

So why on earth would Kaepernick be worth considering heading into Week 14?

Don’t Sleep on Colin Kaepernick Just Yet

Here’s a disclaimer — if you have a better quarterback option in Week 14, roll with it. The 49ers are far too inconsistent to let your season hinge on Kaepernick’s abilities.

But if you need someone under center, Kap could be a legitimate option.

The 49ers host the New York Jets this Sunday. And the Niners won’t have to face the snow and cold like they did at Soldier Field. The Weather Channel’s forecast in Santa Clara is for light showers and a high of 57 degrees on Sunday, which are much better conditions for Kap and Co.

Additionally, the Jets pass defense is bad. Much worse than that of the Bears. Chicago’s pass defense actually ranks sixth in the league (2,644 yards against — although teams don’t have to pass against them often). But New York comes into this week with the NFL’s 22nd-ranked pass defense (2,891).

And while the Jets have done a solid job against the run, scrambling quarterbacks like Kaepernick might have a bit of an advantage if the defense is focusing on running back Carlos Hyde — they will.

Kaepernick might not be the best of options for Week 14. But if you need the playoff-push help, consider giving him a chance to rebound.
