Eagles at Giants Week 9: 3 things we learned

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

The Philadelphia Eagles continued to struggle losing to the New York Giants on Sunday.

One of the top matchups of Week 9 featured a pair of NFC East rivals with both the Eagles and Giants were sitting at 4-3 going into Sunday’s game. New York would come out victorious claiming second place in the division. Rookie quarterback Carson Wentz tried to lead his team to victory late, but they wouldn’t be able to overcome the first half deficit.

Here are the three biggest takeaways from the Giants victory over the Eagles Sunday night.

An accurate Eli Manning is dangerous

Despite two late interceptions by Manning, he ended up finishing 22-for-36 and 257 yards, plus four touchdowns. When he is on target, he has enough talent throughout his wide receiving core to play a great game. Coming into Sunday’s game with only 12 offensive touchdowns, Manning made it a point to find the end zone early and often.

Giants need a run game

Now that the Giants secured second place in the division, they look like they are in prime position to make a run at a Wild Card spot in the NFC. While they’re in contention, if they want any chance to make deep into the postseason, they’ll need a running back presence. Only mustering 11 carries for 32-yards is not going to get the job done. Lest we forget this is an NFC East where Ezekiel Elliott is running crazy so the bar has been set high for what the Giants need to strive for.

Eagles defense is not that great

Coming into Sunday’s game, the Eagles had one of the leagues most lethal defenses. Getting burned for three touchdowns before the end of the first half suggest that’s the Eagles defense might not be as stout of a unit as once assumed. Despite limiting the Giants rushing game, for the second week in a row the Eagles secondary got torched by the opposing receivers.

In Week 10 the Eagles will have yet another tough test as they face off against Julio Jones and the surging  Atlanta Falcons. It’s a home game for the Eagles, but that doesn’t mean their defense shouldn’t anticipate another big test. There is still time to correct things on defense for the Eagles, as they can very much still get back to where they were earlier in the season.
