DE Olivier Vernon's transition tag removed by Dolphins

MIAMI (AP) Defensive end Olivier Vernon's transition tag was removed Wednesday by the Miami Dolphins, allowing him to become a free agent hours after the team signed Mario Williams as a replacement.

The transition tag was for $12.734 million. Vernon is instead expected to land one of the most lucrative deals in free agency after four years in Miami.

The Dolphins also finalized a trade to acquire cornerback Byron Maxwell and linebacker Kiko Alonso from the Philadelphia Eagles, who will receive a draft pick as compensation.

There had been speculation the trade might fall through because of an issue with Maxwell's physical. He missed the final two games last season because of a sprained shoulder.

His agent, Alvin Keels, tweeted that the deal was on: ''Maxwell cleared by Dolphins staff and ready to roll!''

Vernon's departure makes it more likely Miami will retain defensive end Cameron Wake, who is 34 and recovering from a torn Achilles tendon. Wake would be paired with Williams, who signed a $17 million, two-year contract a week after being released by the Buffalo Bills.
