Cowboys' Church out for season

Published Sep. 24, 2012 12:31 a.m. ET

Dallas Cowboys safety Barry Church is done for the season after suffering a ruptured Achilles tendon.

Coach Jason Garrett said after the Cowboys' 16-10 victory Sunday over Tampa Bay that Church will have surgery Monday.

The injury to Church in the third quarter left Dallas without both of its starting safeties.

Gerald Sensabaugh was inactive for the game because of a calf injury sustained in last week's loss at Seattle. Church left that game with a thigh bruise, but practiced during the week and started against the Buccaneers.

Danny McCray replaced Sensabaugh as the starter.

Brandon Carr, the cornerback who got a $50 million deal this offseason, spent significant time at safety after Church got hurt.

Garrett said it's too early to know if Carr will stay at safety.
