WASHINGTON (AP) Washington Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins will play next season on the franchise tag.

Cousins and the team did not agree on a long-term deal before Friday's 4 p.m. ET deadline for franchise players to sign new contracts. The team announced it when the deadline passed.

Cousins will earn $19.95 million next season. He'll be the first quarterback to play on the franchise tag since Drew Brees with the San Diego Chargers in 2005.
