Colts bring Manning off PUP list
Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning is one major step closer to returning to the starting lineup.
The Colts activated Manning off the physically unable to perform (PUP) list on Monday morning, clearing the way for his return to practice. Manning has missed the entire preseason following offseason neck surgery for a bulging disc.
"The move is a continuation of the rehab process," the Colts announced in a team-released statement. "Manning will participate in practice on a limited basis. All of his practice work will be scripted and on a controlled basis. The participation in limited football activity is a standard procedure in the club's rehab protocol."
Manning's status for the Colts' Sept. 11 regular-season opener at Houston remains unknown. Manning has the NFL's longest active streak of consecutive starts (227) dating to his rookie debut in the 1998 season-opener.
Colts general manager Chris Polian told FOXSports.com that Manning would not play in his team's preseason finale at Cincinnati on Thursday. Kerry Collins, who was signed last week as an insurance policy because of Manning’s uncertain health, will get the starting nod. Curtis Painter has started the Colts' first three preseason games.
Manning addressed his situation Friday night in a televised interview during the Indianapolis-Green Bay preseason game. Asked if he could return for the Texans game, Manning said, "I sure hope so. I've never missed a game in my entire (NFL) career because of injury. I sure don't want to start in Week 1 of this season.
"My goal is to play — not just play but play competitively. I want to help the team win. If I'm able to do so, I'll be out there."
