Colin Kaepernick throws first passes of 2016, but still no timetable for return

New San Francisco 49ers coach Chip Kelly is waiting to see what Colin Kaepernick can do in his offense, and vice versa. But the QB is losing valuable time as he recovers from offseason surgery, and offensive coordinator Curtis Modkins said Thursday that there's no timetable for his return.

Kaepernick struggled last season, with just six TD passes and five interceptions, and was benched in favor of Blaine Gabbert. He demanded a trade earlier this offseason but still has taken part in workouts, despite being unable to practice following surgery on his left knee, left shoulder and right thumb. He even threw passes for the first time Thursday.

"Whenever they say Colin's healthy, I'm sure he'll be there," Modkins told NFL.com. "He's around us, he's in the meetings, he's doing a great job. It's not up to me when he's released, so we'll see."
