It’s not often that a rookie taken in the first five rounds of the draft is cut, but the Kansas City Chiefs have proved it's not out of the question.

The team announced on Wednesday that they have released cornerback KeiVarae Russell. He was the team’s third-round pick and their second overall selection in the draft.

The Chiefs obviously have talent in the secondary, but it’s hard to believe they couldn’t find a spot for a player they drafted in the third round just a few months ago. There’s no doubt Russell will be claimed by a team right away as his talent is undeniable.

Russell played his college ball at Notre Dame. He picked off five passes in four years, but he missed all of 2014 due to a stress fracture in his right leg. He’s fully recovered from the injury and played well in training camp, seeing time at nickel corner.

The rookie corner will land on another NFL roster in no time.
