Chiefs' DB coach: Peters 'what we've been missing back there'

Emmitt Thomas is in the Hall of Fame for his prolific cornerback play in Kansas City.

He knows what it takes to play the spot for the Chiefs -- and he likes Marcus' Peters' chances.

“He’s what we’ve been missing back there,’’ Thomas told ESPN's Adam Teicher about the team's first-round pick. “He’s a guy that can intercept the ball and get turnovers back there.’’

Thomas' unit managed only six interceptions all last season. They could certainly use more ballhawks.

The Chiefs legend has no reason to doubt Peters can be that type of player. The Washington product has stood out all camp, including a three-pick performance when the team held its first padded practice of training camp two weeks back.

“He’s a guy that is going to make turnovers, go get the football," Thomas said. "On defense, you need some of those guys to cut the field, make it short for the offense, and take the reps from their offense. I think he’ll be that kind of guy.’’

The Chiefs need him to be right off the bat. Starting cover man Sean Smith will miss three games due to a suspension, and Peters will be called on to fill in and play.
