Chargers go down kicking on game's final play

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 12:32 p.m. ET

For every final heave into the end zone, NFL fans are often treated to a scintillating lateral-reverse-whatever-the-hell-you-call-it final play. Well, the Chargers did that Sunday. Successful, it wasn’t. Entertaining, it was.

With 2 seconds remaining, the Chargers were down 20-17 and had little to no hope left. Phillip Rivers took the snap, stepped back and connected with Danny Woodhead over the middle. Woodhead flipped the ball to Eddie Royal. That’s where this thing really turned into a mess.

The Chargers kept losing ground, hoping for a crease to open, but the Titans were disciplined in their approach.

The cherry on top was a defeated Rivers, who just kicked the ball when it came near him.

It was a nice effort and you can tell that head coach Mike McCoy had this bad boy designed for a while.
