Chacago Bears sign WR Ify Umodu, waive LB Jamil Merrell

The Chicago Bears announced the signing of undrafted free agent wide receiver Ify Umodu on Monday. To make room for Umodu on the roster, the Bears waived linebacker Jamil Merrell, who finished the 2014 season on Chicago's practice squad.

Umodu's deal is a three-year contract, according to ESPN's Jeff Dickerson. The wide receiver tried out for the team in May, during rookie minicamp, but the Bears did not sign him right away.
Umodu is a product of Northern Arizona University, where he caught 136 passes for 1,883 yards and 15 touchdowns through four seasons (missed all of 2013 season with an injury). He turns 23 years old next month.
Umodu (6-3, 215 lbs.) is the exact same size as 2015 first-round selection Kevin White (seventh overall), making him an outside candidate to fill in for the rookie out of West Virginia if he's ever sidelined this summer.
