CB Prince Amukamara agrees to deal with Giants

Published Aug. 5, 2011 1:00 a.m. ET

The New York Giants have agreed to terms with cornerback Prince Amukamara, making him the NFL's last first-round pick to do so.

The 19th overall pick in April's draft, Amukamara agreed to terms late Thursday night after missing the first five days of team workouts.

Todd France, Amukamara's agent, confirmed that his client got the maximum ($8.180 million) allowed under the new rookie salary system with 91.5 percent guaranteed.

Amukamara became the last unsigned first-rounder earlier Thursday when offensive tackle Nate Solder, the 17th pick, signed with New England and defensive tackle Corey Liuget, the 18th pick, inked with San Diego.

Giants general manager Jerry Reese had said Saturday the only thing separating Amukamara from a contract on the first day of training camp was some language in the deal. It took almost a week to clear things up.

Two-time Pro Bowl defensive end Osi Umenyiora missed his fifth straight day of practice while Reese and Tony Agnone, Umenyiora's agent, tried to find a way to make the 29-year-old happy with his contract.

Umenyiora has two years left on a deal that'll pay him roughly $7.1 million. He failed to report to training camp on Friday, alleging that Reese failed to live up to an offseason promise to renegotiate his contract after a 2010 campaign when he had 11.5 sacks and 10 forced fumbles.

''Nothing yet,'' Umenyiora said in an email to The Associated Press on Thursday when asked if there was any progress on a new deal.

Umenyiora missed the first four days of practice because of his contract situation. The team said he sat out Thursday because he claimed his knee hurt.

On the field Thursday, third-year cornerback Bruce Johnson ruptured his Achilles' tendon early in practice. It was the second straight year his season was cut short because of a serious injury.

In 2010, he hurt his knee and played in only five games.

Receivers Domenik Hixon (knee) and Devin Thomas (ankle) did not practice.

With the ratification of the new collective bargaining agreement, running backs Ahmad Bradshaw, Brandon Jacobs and Andre Brown, defensive end Mathias Kiwanuka, defensive tackle Gabe Watson, offensive linemen David Baas, Stacy Andrews, Kevin Boothe, Chris White and Jamon Meredith, tight ends Ben Patrick and Bear Pascoe, quarterback David Carr, receiver Michael Clayton and punter Steve Weatherford all practiced for the first time.

The Giants announced they re-signed defensive tackle Rocky Bernard, who was released last week after failing to re-work his contract. New York also waived injured rookie defensive tackle Martin Parker of Richmond.

Bernard played for the Giants in 2009 and 2010, appearing in 29 games. He had 61 tackles (39 solo) and three sacks. In 2010, he played in 14 games and had 26 tackles and two sacks.
