Cam Newton not at start of practice because of concussion

Published Oct. 5, 2016 1:45 p.m. ET

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) Panthers quarterback Cam Newton was not present for the start of practice because of a concussion.

The league's reigning MVP did not attend the first 20 minutes of practice on Wednesday that were open to reporters, three days after he suffered a concussion in a 48-33 loss to the Atlanta Falcons.

Newton was placed in the league's concussion protocol after taking a hit from Falcons linebacker Deion Jones in the fourth quarter.

The struggling Panthers (1-3) host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday night.

If Newton doesn't play, Derek Anderson would start for Carolina.

Left tackle Michael Oher, who missed the Falcons game with a concussion, was not at practice either.

Carolina's starting right tackle Mike Remmers and running back Jonathan Stewart worked on the side with trainers.
