Brandon Carr on Byron Jones: 'He's a guy that works hard'

Dallas Cowboys first-round draft pick cornerback Byron Jones has made a strong first impression. Last week, Cowboys safety Barry Church was raving about Jones, and now another teammate has professed to be impressed with what he has seen from Jones so far. Cowboys cornerback Brandon Carr joins Church in the Jones fan club.

Although there have been whispers that Carr could be worried about Jones taking his starting job, he confirmed there is no support to this claim.

"I'm all about mentoring guys," Carr told Todd Archer of ESPN.com. "I'm all about competition. I'm all about guys getting better each and every day. He's a young guy. He has a lot to learn. I feel like I can add some teaching lessons to him as well. But he's a guy with tremendous athletic ability. Now he's got to translate that to Sundays and go out there and play fast."

Time will tell where Jones and Carr shake out on the 2015 depth chart, but for now, they both have a key role to play in helping to create the best possible defensive unit. Carr is certain that Jones is ready for that task.

"He's a sponge right now," Carr said. "Rookies come in with a clean slate. They come in humble. They come in ready to learn, ready to go out there and compete. That’s all you can ask for. He's a guy that works hard. He does his best each and every day and tries to get better each and every day."

As it stands now, Carr is set to open OTAs as the starting cornerback across from Orlando Scandrick. Jones might see some work with the first time in nickel packages.
