Bills wrap up NFL draft picking K Potter

Published Apr. 28, 2012 8:40 p.m. ET

The Buffalo Bills have selected Western Michigan kicker John Potter with their ninth and final pick in the NFL draft.

Selected 251st overall, Potter completed his four-year career with 333 points, to set a school record among kickers. Though he missed all three field-goal attempts from beyond 50 yards, the Bills were particularly impressed with how he consistently strong he was on kickoffs.

He had 36 touchbacks last season.

General manager Buddy Nix says the Bills would consider using him in kickoff situations in a bid to force opponents to start at their own 20.

He becomes the first kicker the Bills have selected in the draft since picking John Nies in 1990.

Potter was the sixth player the Bills selected over the final four rounds on Saturday.
