With injuries to its top two running backs, the Buffalo Bills have dipped into the free-agent market for a replacement.

Phillip Tanner signed Tuesday with the Bills, FOX Sports confirmed.

Tanner, 26, spent his first three NFL seasons (2011-2013) as a backup with Dallas. He spent time with Indianapolis and the Cowboys during the preseason but was released by both squads.

C.J. Spiller (collarbone) and Fred Jackson (groin) were both hurt last Sunday in Buffalo's 17-16 victory over Minnesota. Spiller has been placed on Injured Reserve with designation to return and will miss at least six weeks.

Anthony Dixon and Bryce Brown are expected to carry the rushing load in the absence of Spiller and Jackson.
