After draft slide, Jets' Geno Smith fires agents

Published Apr. 30, 2013 11:35 p.m. ET

Geno Smith has fired his agents, a few days after slipping out of the first round of the NFL draft and falling to the New York Jets in the second round.

The record-breaking quarterback from West Virginia tells SiriusXM NFL Radio on Tuesday that his drop to 39th overall Friday night wasn't the reason he parted ways with Select Sports Group, but didn't want to ''shed too much light on it.'' Smith added that he wasn't comfortable discussing the specifics, but insisted it wasn't ''because of one particular incident.''

The decision by Smith was first reported by Sports Business Journal.

Smith, who will compete with Mark Sanchez and David Garrard for the Jets' starting job, must wait five days before signing with another agency.
