49ers top Raiders despite shaky Smith

Alex Smith showed he can deliver a crushing block and bring down a ball carrier with a tackle.

Unfortunately for Smith, those tasks are secondary when it comes to being an NFL quarterback. It was when he was called upon to pass that Smith struggled.

Smith completed 3 of 9 passes and threw an interception in what might have been his last chance to beat out Shaun Hill for San Francisco's starting quarterback job before the 49ers held off the Oakland Raiders 21-20 Saturday night.
