San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith became the most high-profile volunteer to get involved in the search to find missing California teenager Sierra Lamar on Saturday.

Smith was among 581 people who turned out for a search of the fields, hills and neighborhoods within a 20-mile radius of Lamar's home in Morgan Hill, Calif., the Contra Costa Times reported.

The 15-year-old Lamar was last seen on March 16. She had left for school in the morning but did not show up for classes.

"Alex Smith was one of the volunteers today," said Marc Klaas, founder of the KlaasKids Foundation. "He went out with a group on a search for Sierra."

Smith, whose family lives in Los Gatos — about 20 miles northwest of Morgan Hill — also dropped off food and water before joining the search.

Lamar is described as 5 feet 2, with brown hair. She last was seen carrying a pink and black Juicy brand purse.
