49ers' Kaepernick faces 4-6 month recovery after shoulder surgery
San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick underwent surgery Tuesday to repair a torn labrum in his non-throwing shoulder.
Kaepernick is expected to make a full recovery in four to six months even though the tear in his left shoulder was "extensive," the Sacramento Bee reported citing a source.
The fifth-year quarterback is expected to remain hospitalized overnight in Vail, Colo., before returning home. Kaepernick was placed on season-ending injured reserve Saturday after an MRI exam earlier in the week revealed the severity of the injury.
Kaepernick was benched earlier this month in favor of Blaine Gabbert due to a series of poor performances. His future with the club remains uncertain - Kaepernick will have his 2016 salary of $11.9 million guaranteed if he's still on the 49ers' roster on April 1.
He finished the season having thrown for 1,615 yards with six touchdowns versus five interceptions in nine games and a career-low 78.5 passer rating.
