49ers dealing with Anthony Davis distraction on eve of season opener

To re-retire or not to re-retire? For Anthony Davis and the San Francisco 49ers, that is the question.

Cam Inman of the Mercury News reported the San Francisco tackle, who returned to the 49ers after an 11-month retirement at the end of June, is considering retirement again.

This, just two days before Davis was set to start as right guard against the Los Angeles Rams in their season opener on Monday.

The news was confirmed by Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com, who reports the 49ers have now listed Davis as questionable for Monday's game, with Andrew Tiller likely starting instead if Davis is unavailable.

Maiocco also reports that Davis' agent Drew Rosenhaus had no comment on Davis' status at this time.

A 49ers practice report revealed that Davis did not participate on Saturday for a non-injury related reason. A team spokesman did not confirm Davis' intentions to the Mercury News, but Inman reported league sources said the 49ers were apparently trying to convince Davis to reconsider his decision.

According to Jason Cole of Bleacher Report, that apparently worked:

First-round draft pick Davis announced his first retirement in June 2015 at the age of 25, just four days before the team's mandatory June minicamp, citing concussion symptoms. The 49ers placed him on the reserve-retired list, and Davis sat out the entire 2015 season.

During that time, Davis tangled with a some members of the 49ers on social media, throwing barbs at players like left tackle Joe Staley and team GM Trent Baalke on Twitter. "There have been times when we've gone at it, and he understands why and we move on," Baalke said upon Davis' return to the roster. "Now it's [about] blending back in and going to work."

Unclear whether those good feelings still stand.
