Stanley Johnson suspended for Friday's game against Clippers
Stanley Johnson’s sophomore season has gotten off to a poor start, and his difficulties have been added to with a one-game suspension.
Stanley Johnson‘s sophomore season has been an exercise in frustration for fans of the Detroit Pistons so far. After a playoff and offseason full of heightened expectations, he has stagnated this season in many respects and regressed in others.
The frustrations may have hit a low point thus far as Johnson has been suspended for the Pistons’ game against the Los Angeles Clippers on Friday night. While head coach Stan Van Gundy won’t go into details, he has been suspended one game for violating team rules.

Per Mike Brudenell of the Detroit Free Press:
“He would have been (an option), but he’s not going to be with us tonight,” said Van Gundy of Johnson’s status at the pre-game presser. “We suspended him for tonight. So he won’t be here – he won’t be an option tonight.”Van Gundy would not elaborate further on Johnson’s suspension apart from adding, “team rules … violation of team rules.”
Johnson’s absence against the Clippers is more crucial than usual. Thanks to Reggie Bullock’s torn meniscus, Johnson was expected to play heavier minutes than normal this season. This will leave the Pistons short on the wing against possibly the best team in the NBA so far this young season.
There’s no word on the reason behind the suspension, but it might be reasonable to wonder if Van Gundy’s patience with the 20-year-old is waning.
