Sixers to honor Moses Malone with tribute night Dec. 1 vs. Lakers

Hall of Fame big man Moses Malone passed away back in September at the age of 60, and the 76ers will honor him with a tribute night on Dec. 1 as the team hosts the Lakers.

That "major announcement" should be the retiring of Malone's jersey, which is something that should have happened a long time ago.

The Sixers will honor the three-time NBA MVP with special tributes throughout the game, including an appearance by Malone’s 1982-83 NBA Championship teammate Julius “Dr. J.” Erving. The Sixers organization will make a special presentation to Malone’s family, who will reveal a major announcement at halftime that will honor his legacy as a Sixer. Themed basket stanchions will be dedicated by Kia Motors America, and the first 15,000 fans will receive a tribute poster also sponsored by Kia Motors America. Tribute videos and testimonials by NBA stars including Shaquille O’Neal, Sixers alumni Charles Barkley, Dominique Wilkins, and Earl Cureton will play throughout the game. Sixers players will wear red shooting shirts bearing the name “Malone” on the back, with the number “2” encased in a black star on the front.

Malone signed with Sixers as a veteran free agent on September 2, 1982. In five seasons with the Sixers he averaged 24.5 points and 12.0 rebounds per game, including 22.7 points and an NBA-high 15.3 rebounds during the 1982-83 Championship season. Malone was a three-time NBA MVP, including during the 1982-83 NBA Championship season with Sixers, wherein he was also an NBA Finals MVP. He was a 12-time NBA All-Star, including all four seasons during his first stint with Sixers from 1983-86, and six-time NBA rebounding champion, including the 1982-85 seasons with Sixers.
