Report: Pelicans sign Anthony Davis to five-year, $145M extension
By Vincent Frank
The New Orleans Pelicans didn’t wait long before doling out some major cash to keep their star player on the team for the foreseeable future. Just minutes after free agency opened up at 12:00 a.m. ET on Wednesday, the Pelicans reportedly came to an agreement on a five-year, $145 million extension with star big man Anthony Davis. Yahoo's Adrian Wojnarowski reports via Twitter:
New Orleans star Anthony Davis has agreed to a five-year, $145 million maximum contract extension, league source tells Yahoo Sports.
Even at just 22 years old, Davis is already among the best all-around players in the game. He averaged 24.4 points, 10.2 rebounds and a league-leading 2.9 blocks per game en route to leading New Orleans to the playoffs this past season.
By signing the five-year extension, Davis will still be able to cash in on a larger max deal when he hits free agency before his 30th birthday.
This is a win for both the player and the team.
