New York Knicks: Derrick Rose Chasing Championship Dreams

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

New York Knicks point guard Derrick Rose has gained perspective following his civil trial. Now that he’s back on the court, he’s focused on winning big.

New York Knicks point guard Derrick Rose has missed the better part of the past five seasons. True as that may be, the 28-year-old remains one of the most decorated players in the NBA.

For as much as he’s accomplished, Rose has an understandably empty feeling from having not yet won an NBA championship.

Rose became the youngest MVP in NBA history when he won the award in 2010-11. He inevitably made the All-NBA First Team that season and is already a three-time All-Star with an Eastern Conference Finals appearance on his resume.

According to Ohm Youngmisuk of ESPN, Rose has achieved more than most, but is still chasing his most coveted goal.

“I’m very confident, man,” Rose said. “I really believe this why I’m here, to hoop. I still have a lot of confidence in my ability. The confidence never left. If anything [the trial] made me focus a little more, like having time to myself in the gym and just working on things that I think I need to work on.

“We didn’t make the playoffs last year. I’m still chasing something right now. I just want to hoop and just let my game speak for itself.”

One is inclined to believe that Rose is alluding to an NBA championship.

Rose enters the 2016-17 NBA regular season with career averages of 19.7 points, 6.2 assists, and 3.7 rebounds per game. He averaged 25.0 points and 7.7 assists when he won MVP in 2010-11 and tallied marks of 21.8 points and 7.9 assists in 2011-12.

Despite his injuries, Rose has maintained solid averages of 17.0 points and 4.8 assists in 31.0 minutes over the past two seasons.

In 2011, Rose led the Chicago Bulls to their first Eastern Conference Finals appearance since 1998. He came dangerously close to winning a championship, but injuries took his chance to build upon that extraordinary success.

In New York, Rose is hoping he can get back to the playoffs and continue pursuing his championship dreams.

Rose is joined by a number of hungry veterans who are in a similar position. Joakim Noah won Defensive Player of the Year and Carmelo Anthony has a scoring title, and both have been to the Conference Finals.

Neither have won an elusive NBA championship.

The question is: can Rose seure the title he’s long been dreaming of winning?
