San Francisco Giants fifth starter Todd Wellemeyer has been placed on the disabled list with a strained right quadriceps muscle. He was injured during Thursday's game against the Cincinnati Reds when he hit into a double play with the bases loaded in the top of the third inning.
The Giants called up right-hander Joe Martinez on Friday from Triple-A Fresno to provide immediate bullpen help. If he isn't overused this weekend against the Oakland Athletics, Martinez could be a candidate to start in Wellemeyer's spot Tuesday versus Baltimore.
Giants manager Bruce Bochy said the plan was still being discussed.
Wellemeyer is 3-5 with a 5.52 ERA 12 appearances and 11 starts this year.
