Span ejected, throws bat

Published Apr. 28, 2010 3:49 a.m. ET

Minnesota Twins outfielder Denard Span threw his bat after being ejected from Tuesday night's game against the Detroit Tigers.

After taking a called third strike in the eighth inning, Span waved dismissively at home plate umpire Paul Emmel and was immediately ejected. As Span walked back to the dugout, he threw his bat in disgust toward the backstop. It landed just short of the netting.

Span was then grabbed by teammate Orlando Hudson while Minnesota manager Ron Gardenhire came out to discuss the situation with Emmel.

Moments after the game, Span and Gardenhire visited the umpire's room, where Span apologized to Emmel.

``I can't let that happen - It's something that will never happen again,'' said Span, who said it was his idea to apologize to Emmel. ``I embarrassed myself, I embarrassed the team, I embarrassed the umpire, and I hate to think about kids seeing me doing that on TV.''
