The Philadelphia Phillies landed a setup man and back-of-the-rotation starter Saturday, reaching agreements with free-agent right-hander Mike Adams and left-hander John Lannan, major-league sources said.
Adams agreed to a two-year, $12 million contract with a vesting option, according to a source. Lannan agreed to a one-year deal, but the financial terms were not immediately known. Both deals are pending physicals.
Adams, 34, underwent surgery in October for thoracic outlet syndrome, which is caused by a rib pushing down on a nerve and causing numbness.
The injury was believed to be responsible for Adams’ struggles in September with the Texas Rangers. He has been an elite setup man the past five seasons, posting a 1.98 ERA in 295 innings for San Diego and Texas.
Lannan, 28, spent most of last season at Class AAA after losing his spot in the Washington Nationals’ rotation to lefty Ross Detwiler. But in six starts for the Nats, Lannan was 4-1 with a 4.13 ERA.
The Phillies’ top three starters are right-hander Roy Halladay and lefties Cliff Lee and Cole Hamels. Right-hander Kyle Kendrick also is expected to be in the rotation. Lannan, 42-52 with a 4.01 ERA lifetime, likely will be the fifth starter.
Adams, meanwhile, will set up for closer Jonathan Papelbon, giving the Phillies a potentially dominant late-inning combination.
Previously this offseason, the Phils traded for Adams’ former Rangers’ teammate, third baseman Michael Young, and center fielder Ben Revere, whom the team acquired from Minnesota.
The Phillies continue to look for a corner outfielder, with free agent Cody Ross and the Chicago Cubs’ Alfonso Soriano among the possibilities.
Adams is represented by ACES, the agency headed by Seth and Sam Levinson, Lannan by Brodie Van Wagenen of CAA.
