Sources: Branyan chooses Indians over Rays

Published Feb. 19, 2010 12:00 a.m. ET

Free agent Russell Branyan has chosen the Indians over the Rays, major-league sources confirmed.

The deal, first reported by ESPN.com, is expected to result in Branyan getting everyday at-bats at multiple corner positions. It is worth $2 million with $1 million in incentives.

The Rays had less playing time to offer. They would have used Branyan mostly as a DH, and also in right field.

Branyan, 33, batted .251 with 31 home runs and 76 RBIs in 116 games for the Mariners last season.
