Source: BoSox on verge of dealing Kotchman to M's
Red Sox first baseman Casey Kotchman is on the verge of being
traded to the Mariners, according to a major-league source.
The deal, first reported by ESPN.com, will bring the Red Sox
utility man Bill Hall and a minor leaguer.
Kotchman became expendable when the Red Sox reached agreement
with free-agent third baseman Adrian Beltre, ensuring that Kevin
Youkilis will remain at first base.
Beltre's deal will become official once he passes a physical.
The Red Sox also are expected to trade third baseman Mike Lowell.
The addition of Kotchman should ensure that Jose Lopez
remains at second base for the Mariners and could reduce the
chances of the team re-signing free-agent first baseman Russell
Branyan.
The team had considered a number of scenarios in which Lopez
might move to first, including playing Hall at third and Chone
Figgins at second.
But when asked about that possible alignment Tuesday,
Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik said, "I don't think
that's going to happen. As of right now, 'Lopey' is our second
baseman."
Zduriencik left open the possibility that his plans could
change.
Hall will likely play infield and outfield for the Red Sox.
