Several batters hit as Pirates-Phillies exhibition game gets feisty

CLEARWATER, Fla. -- Andrew McCutchen got buzzed by Phillies closer Jonathan Papelbon as a Sunday exhibition suddenly turned testy before the Pittsburgh Pirates beat Philadelphia 5-0.

Papelbon relieved to begin the fifth inning and retired the first two batters before squarely hitting Starling Marte. Neil Walker followed with a single and Papelbon's first pitch to McCutchen was a high-and-tight fastball, sending the NL MVP spinning out of the batter's box.

McCutchen glared at Papelbon, stepped back in and hit his second single of the game.

When the Phillies came to bat in the bottom half, Pirates reliever Bryan Morris drilled leadoff man Cody Asche in the body. Asche slung his bat aside and took his base.

There was no further trouble. Walker, plunked by a pitch earlier in the game, homered in the seventh and the next Pirates batter, Josh Harrison, was nicked without incident.
