Pirates place LHP Paul Maholm on 15-day DL

The Pittsburgh Pirates have placed starter Paul Maholm on the 15-day disabled list with a left shoulder strain.

The move, retroactive to Aug. 18 is the first trip to the DL in Maholm's seven-year career.

The 29-year-old left-hander is 6-14 with a 3.66 ERA this season. He gave up three runs in five innings in his last start, a 7-2 loss to St. Louis on Wednesday, his fifth straight defeat.

The Pirates will make a move to replace Maholm on the roster before Saturday's game against Cincinnati.
