Jeter passes Honus Wagner for 6th on career hit list with No. 3,431

Derek Jeter passed Honus Wagner on the career hits list with 3,431, getting an infield single in the sixth inning Saturday against the Cleveland Indians.

Jeter led off the inning with a soft grounder off Corey Kluber that shortstop Jose Ramirez charged but failed to pick up with his bare hand. Jeter tied Wagner on Friday night with a grounder that Ramirez made a nice play on but the throw went off first baseman Carlos Santana's glove as the Yankees captain crossed the base.

Unfortunately for Jeter and the Yankees, Kluber pitched four-hit ball for a superb six innings and Ramirez hit his first career homer as the Indians ended the Yankees' three-game winning streak with a 3-0 victory.

Jeter finished 1 for 4 with a strikeout in the loss.

"I try not to think about it but today, Honus Wagner, he's the last one on the list that has played short at all — so that one hits home a little bit," Jeter said. "But anytime you're passing guys that have had the careers that they've had, it's kind of overwhelming."

Kluber (13-6) did not allow a hit until Jacoby Ellsbury doubled with one out in the fourth and struck out 10. The right-hander has allowed only one earned run in his last 31 1/3 innings over four starts. He has won six straight decisions.

"He's nasty, man," Jeter said of Kluber. 

Jeter has said this will be his final season so moving up to fifth will be very difficult. He needs 84 hits to catch Tris Speaker at 3,515.
