Garcia pitches in minor league game

Published Mar. 24, 2011 5:30 p.m. ET

New York Yankees rotation candidate Freddy Garcia allowed one run and four hits over six innings in a minor league game on Thursday.

Garcia pitched for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre against Philadelphia's Lehigh Valley and struck out three during a 67-pitch outing. He went 12-6 with a 4.64 ERA for the Chicago White Sox last season.

Garcia and Ivan Nova appear to be in position to win the two rotation spots behind CC Sabathia, A.J. Burnett and Phil Hughes. Bartolo Colon and Sergio Mitre are also competing for the starting roles.

Colon, who hasn't pitched in the majors since September 2009, has been impressive in exhibition games.

The long man out of the bullpen is expected come from the rotation candidates.
