Brewers call up 3B prospect Taylor Green

Milwaukee Brewers prospect Taylor Green had left wrist surgery so complicated two years ago he can't remember the details.

''It's healthy now, that's all that matters,'' Green said.

The 24-year-old third baseman will make his first major league appearance whenever he gets a chance off the bench for the NL Central-leading Brewers.

''Just getting called up in general is a huge honor, especially now on such a good, impressive team. I'm just happy to be here. It's unbelievable,'' said Green, who was called up Saturday after hitting .336 with 22 homers and 88 RBIs in 120 games at Triple-A Nashville.

The Brewers went ahead and made the move instead of waiting until Sept. 1, meaning Green would be eligible for postseason play. Manager Ron Roenicke said that was not a major consideration when deciding between Green and Mat Gamel.

The Brewers have not discussed any of their playoff plans even though they hold a comfortable lead in the division with just over a month to go.

Roenicke said Green will be used to shore up the bench and may get spot starts in place of Casey McGehee against a right-handed pitcher if McGehee doesn't have good numbers against him.

''I don't want to bring him up here and then just never play him,'' Roenicke said.

Green was a 25th-round draft pick in 2005 by the club who became the Brewers' minor league player of the year in 2007 before his surgery in February 2009.

Before moving to third base, he started his career at second.

''I'm actually more comfortable over there (at second) because I grew up my whole life playing over there. But it doesn't matter, I'll play left-handed pitcher if they want me to,'' he said.

The Brewers are waiting for second baseman Rickie Weeks to return from a severely sprained left ankle.

Veterans Jerry Hairston, Josh Wilson and Craig Counsell have all filled in at second. Roenicke said Green would not be in the mix at that position for the moment.

''At least right now, I say no,'' Roenicke said. ''We've got some other guys that can do it at second.''
