Benson feels good after throwing 40 pitches

Published Jul. 21, 2010 12:41 a.m. ET

Kris Benson's second attempt to return from a strained shoulder is going well so far.

The Arizona right-hander felt good after throwing 40 pitches of batting practice before Tuesday's game against the Mets and is expected to increase his load to about 60 pitches in another session on Saturday.

Playing for his third team in three seasons, Benson opened the season as the Diamondbacks' fifth starter, but went on the DL after being pulled in the second inning of a start against Colorado on April 28. He had his first rehab assignment cut short last month due to lingering soreness and received cortisone shot deep into the shoulder joint.

No timetable has been set for his return.
