Georgia's Bellamy has DUI charges dropped

Published Jun. 18, 2015 6:29 p.m. ET

Georgia linebacker Davin Bellamy got some good news recently, as a DUI charge from last year reportedly was dropped following a controversy involving the arresting officer.

The Athens Banner-Herald reported that three charges -- the DUI, underage possession of alcohol and speeding -- were dropped last month after police officer Kris Ward was fired amid allegations of "sexually assaulting a juvenile several years ago."

A court document stated that "the arresting officer in this case has been terminated from the ACC Police Department. As a result the State will not be able to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt at trial and has decided to dismiss the charges."

Bellamy, who was charged in July 2014, was suspended for two games at the beginning of last season and tallied 17 tackles after his return. Now a redshirt sophomore, he is expected to again see the field in a backup role this year.
