ASU Football: Scouting Report, Oregon Ducks
With the football season officially upon us, it is time to scout out what sort of competition ASU football will see this Saturday in the University of Oregon Ducks.
The Arizona State Sun Devils will have a lot on the line in their game at Oregon. If they win, the Sun Devils will snap a two-game losing streak, become bowl eligible and will earn their first victory against Oregon since 2004.
In order to get the victory, the Sun Devils will need to make sure that they keep their eye on certain Oregon players that have the potential to be the difference makers of the game.
More from Devils in Detail
1. Quarterback Justin Herbert
Herbert was given the start last week against Cal and he performed well for the Duchs. He led them to a 49 point game and while they did lose, it was a double overtime thriller where either team could win.
The story line with Herbert is eerily similar to the story line of USC freshman quarterback Sam Darnold. Darnold showed a lot of potential the week prior to their game against ASU even though they lost to Utah. The next week, Darnold looked like an absolute star as he led USC to a convincing win over ASU.
Herbert will be looking to find the same success Darnold found against ASU’s secondary. If Herbert can find that sort of success then ASU could drop their third straight game.
2. Running back Royce Freeman
Freeman is a running back that gives Oregon the ability to have a run game that is effective in all situations. He is able to pick up a third-and-one or a third-and-10 with ease. He is the perfect running back for a freshman quarterback who needs some help from the backfield. Freeman has 523 yards on the season to go along with seven touchdowns.
With the dual attack of both Herbert and Freeman, the ASU defense will have their hands full. If the defense is able to stop those two, then the Sun Devils will be in good position to end their recent skid.
