After sweeping changes, what's next for Texas' evolving offense?
This is what we thought we knew about the Texas offense just two weeks ago: Tyrone Swoopes at quarterback and offensive coordinator Shawn Watson calling plays for an up-tempo offense that would lean heavily on tailback Johnathan Gray.
That last a week.
Here's what we think we know heading into Week 3: Jerrod Heard at quarterback and wide receivers coach Jay Norvell calling the plays.
Other than that, we might this week's opponent, the Cal Golden Bears, might not as much about what they'll see Saturday night as we do.
“We want people to watch us and know what we do,” Norvell said during his first weekly press conference Tuesday, which he has also taken over for the demoted Watson.
But what will they do? The redshirt freshman Heard has phenomenal quickness and is elusive, certainly a different dynamic than what Swoopes brings. It opens a new world of possibilities of designed runs for the quarterback that simply went nowhere with the taller, heavier Swoopes running them.
Heard's dual-threat capability was immediately felt against Rice when he charged down field on Texas' first possession. Yet, he also only threw seven pass attempts, completing four. It's certainly expected that he's going to need to a lot more passing against a Cal team that brings an explosive offense capable of lighting up the scoreboard.
“When Jerrod Heard drops back he doesn't need to be thinking about 20 different things,” Norvell said. “He needs to be thinking about his primary receiver, his secondary receiver and running. Period. And probably running needs to move up in that category.”
After Saturday, we'll know a lot more about Heard, Norvell and the plan to make Texas' offense a threat again.
