VCU beats LaSalle 88-70 to win 12th straight

PHILADELPHIA (AP) Melvin Johnson scored 30 points and made 8 of 13 3-pointers and VCU beat La Salle 88-70 on Wednesday night to win its 12th straight game.

Jonathan Williams scored a career-high 14 points, Justin Tillman added 13 and the Rams shot 53 percent from the floor and made 11 of 27 3-pointers.

VCU (17-5, 9-0 Atlantic 10) led 44-28 at halftime behind Johnson's 20 points, but La Salle gained on a 13-4 run and trailed by 11, 56-45, on Amar Stukes' layup with 13:34 left in the second half.

Stukes sparked an 8-3 run with a 3-pointer and the Explorers closed within 85-67 on his two free throws with 2:11 left, but the Explorers got no closer.

With 11-straight wins, the Rams entered the game tied with Wichita State for the nation's second-longest win streak, behind Stony Brook with 14-straight wins.

Stukes led La Salle (5-15, 1-8) with a career-high 17 points.
