UConn's new Husky mascot might be most adorable puppy ever

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 7:03 p.m. ET

There’s a new puppy in Storrs, Conn., and he’s bound to melt your heart.

The University of Connecticut has selected a new puppy, Jonathan XIV, to be the school’s 14th husky mascot. The husky has been the face of UConn since 1935, and Jonathan XIV joins a long line of canines named after former Connecticut Gov. Jonathan Trumbell, nicknamed “Brother Jonathan” by George Washington.

A student search committee selected this purebred Siberian Husky because of his “outgoing personality,” as he will frequently interact with UConn students and fans at various school events. A UConn blog post noted that Jonathan XIV’s close resemblance to the new logo “helped in making him a unanimous choice for the part.”

His predecessor, Jonathan XIII, has been the UConn mascot since 2008.

UConn basketball is having a solid season, as expected. Led by senior point guard and Roxbury, Mass., native Shabazz Napier, the team is 17-4 and ranked No. 4 in the American Athletic Conference.
